Dear Family and Friends,
The Covid -19 crisis threatens everyone's way of life, but it is especially difficult for some
of us, including people with low income, pre-existing medical conditions, and those with
inflexible jobs.
This is an urgent appeal to help the poor and most vulnerable in Sri Lanka while the
country is going through a third wave of Covid -19 and Sri Lanka is now facing rising
pressures from the Covid - 19 pandemic.
The number of daily cases and deaths are increasing rapidly. The authorities and
healthcare facilities are overwhelmed and struggling to provide emergency medical care.
They are running out of intensive care beds and much needed medical emergency
supplies.
Sri Lanka is a small island and the population is just under 21.9 million. So far, they only
managed to fully vaccinate 0.8% (177, 000) of the population.
The Covid-19 shock came against the backdrop of pre-existing weaknesses. The economic impact of Covid - 19 has forced millions out of informal work and into food insecurity. The job and earning losses in key sectors (such as construction, manufacturing, and tourism)
have suffered heavily. Merchandise exports such as textiles and tea suffered from weak demand in Europe and the United States and supply chain disruptions, while the closure of airports brought tourism to a standstill. Construction and textile manufacturing, which require workers to be physically present, suffered the largest shocks.
As some of our family members come from Sri Lanka and we still have extended family members and friends living there, we have a good understanding and insight into the real situation beyond what the media is broadcasting.
We believe that organisations that are deeply rooted in local communities are doing their best to help people.
However, we as a family living in the UK feel that we are still in a position to make a difference despite the situation we are in.
As the situation evolves, your donations to this fund will help some of the most vulnerable people in the communities in Sri Lanka, and
TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

ll the money raised from this campaign will be put towards pandemic relief services in food assistance, basic health care (to pay for medication for people who are on routine medication for pre-existing conditions, purchase masks etc.), and academic enrichment to as many children as possible. It has been reported that 70% of Sri Lankan school children do not have access to online lessons as they have no access to a device or broadband facilities.
